- For only $30, a store around here is selling a Precision Instruments
- High Speed Controller Card (ISA Bus, 16c550), supporting 2 16c550
- serial ports, an ecp/epp parallel, floppy and game port, etc...
-
- I bought it because my old 386sx has an 8250 uart. That's the only
- reason I got it. I thought i could
- just plug it in (and disable the comm port on my motherboard).
- Well, it's easy enough to disable the comm port on the MB with jumper
- switches: i've done that before. But i plugged in the card, attached
- the external modem to the serial port, turned on the pc, and it
- wouldn't boot up: the A-floppy drive light stayed continuously lit
- and everything froze after the first second of turning it on (no hard
- drive action, either). I took the card out, and it's fine.
-
- I must have something to do with interrupts, but i'm just going to
- return it. (Unless someone has a simple solution).
-
- But the "user manual" (a one page sheet) only says (in CAPS IS WHAT
- THEY SAY; i put my comments in lower case):
-
- KEY FEATURES:
-
- 1. ......ISA IDE PORT CAN BE SELECTED AS ENABLED OR DISABLED.
-
- 2. SERIAL PORTS EQUIP (that's they're spelling) with 16-byte fifo and are
- software compatible with 16c550
-
- (i assume the above means that there is a 16550 chip on the serial
- ports!).
-
- 3. ISA IDE PORT CAN BE SELECTED AS PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL OR SECONDARY
-
- ...then a more things, not relevant.
-
- JUMPER SETTINGS:
-
- This is wierd. All it says is:
-
- ISA LED: IDE DRIVE LED INDICATOR (what does this mean? I know what
- led usually means, but..)
-
- JRD & JWR FOR FUTURE USE
-
- JUMPER ARRAY: followed by four columns:
-
- PIN DEFINITION DEFAULT OPTION
-
- Then there are letters under the pin column, definitions like "ISA IDE
- PORT EN/DISABLE, default's like "ENABLE (H)", and options like "DISABLE (L)".
-
-
- That's it! If i could, i would disable anything related to IDE drive, since
- i don't want that interfering with my hard drive or floppy (both driven
- by controller cards in my pc). But there's nothing at all on this
- new controller card that can be "set" or "adjusted", at least as far
- as i can see. I know that some internal modems let you change pin settings
- on the card by pulling out little pins and placing them somewhere else.
- This has nothing like that (unless i'm not seeing it), and i just stared
- at it for about 30 minutes!.
-
- Well, all i know is, it's not like just plugging in an internal modem
- (which always works). I wonder why this doesn't.
